This scene features much less ambiguously on his Door of Good and Evil at St. Peter’s with a stocked and shackled slave about to be struck by a slavedriver. Here we have the same slave, but the driver is replaced by a distant figure. Perhaps this is San Pedro Claver, the patron saint of slaves guiding the man through the horror or it could represent the malevolent force of the trade itself.
